Does anyone know how short a english mane is supposed to be pulled? I am trying to get my thoroughbred hunter/jumper back into "neat" shape, and I know about the bridle path, and trimming under his jaw, and all that mess, but I don't remember how short to pull his mane... Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Horses shown in English classes have their manes braided. Length is not so much an issue as to the thickness of the mane. You want to thin the mane out to make small braids, not shorten the mane. If you are showing the horse cross-country then the mane is short and thick, the length is about 3-4 inches.
